Official Meade County XC practice will begin on July 15, 2026.
Group running practice has begun.
Meade County High School Cross Country has a challenging and rewarding summer training program designed to prepare athletes for success during the fall cross country season. Success in cross country is built long before the first race of the year. The official season is simply too short to develop the fitness, toughness, and consistency needed to compete at a high level without dedicated summer training.
If you want to improve, compete for varsity spots, and help our team succeed, summer running is essential. The athletes who make the biggest improvements in the fall are almost always the athletes who trained consistently during the summer.
Our summer program is designed for athletes of all experience levels — from beginners running their first miles to experienced runners preparing for championship competition. The goal is not perfection. The goal is consistency, growth, and building strong habits one day at a time.
Participation in the Meade County XC Summer Program is completely free. Summer training focuses on:
Aerobic development
Injury prevention
Strength and mobility
Mental toughness
Team culture and accountability
Learning how to train and compete the right way
Our program philosophy is centered on discipline, persistence, and team culture. We believe great runners are developed through consistent daily effort and a willingness to embrace challenges together. Summer training is where the foundation for championship teams is built.
Cross country is difficult, but so is life. Learning how to stay disciplined, push through discomfort, and work toward long-term goals prepares athletes for success far beyond running.
The only requirements for joining the Meade County XC Summer Program are:
A positive attitude
Consistent effort
A willingness to improve
Supporting your teammates
Commitment to doing the harder right instead of the easier wrong
No prior running experience is required. Every athlete starts somewhere, and our coaches and team leaders are committed to helping athletes develop at a safe and challenging pace.
Builds the aerobic fitness needed for fall racing
Helps prevent injuries by gradually increasing fitness
Improves mental toughness and confidence
Creates team chemistry and accountability
Gives athletes an opportunity to grow physically and mentally before the season begins
Log your workouts on Strava. Creating an account is free and allows coaches to monitor training consistency, encourage athletes, and help everyone stay accountable throughout the summer. Athletes should join the Meade County XC Strava group and upload runs regularly.
(Workouts logged on Strava will count toward summer participation incentives, team challenges, and future team rewards.)
Athletes who consistently train with their teammates during the summer improve significantly more during the season. The first reason is simple: the runs get completed. The second is that athletes naturally learn the correct effort and pacing for each day. Easy days stay easy, harder efforts become more focused, and athletes stay more consistent. Finally, training with teammates reduces the mental burden of difficult training. Hard workouts become easier to handle when you are surrounded by people working toward the same goals.
Just as importantly, summer training builds relationships. Whether it is talking during cooldowns, grabbing food after practice, hanging out after long runs, or competing in team challenges, those shared experiences create the trust and culture that strong teams are built on.
Cross country is an individual sport performed in a team environment. The best teams are connected, supportive, and willing to suffer together. Summer is where those bonds begin.
